In June 2012 Microsoft has issued security updates:
and in October 2012:
Above mentioned updates cause problems while running 16 bit applications:
- an error message: “NTVDM.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close”,
- application hangs,
- distortions in “on screen” generated graphics.
In the case of one or more of above mentioned problems or any other unexpected issues with 16 bit application, it is recommended to apply one of the following solutions:
- uninstall and block above listed security updates – unfortunately this could block some other programs from runing,
- apply one of recommended by Microsoft “hotfix” (e.g. KB2732488) – unfortunately this usually does not solve all existing problems,
- run 16 bit applications under free DOSBox emulator,
- in the case of 64 bit version of Windows, the use of DOSBox emulator is the only solution.
The use of DOSBox so far is the only remedy to all existing problems, and the only recommended until Microsoft would issue properly working security updates, again allowing problem-free use of 16 bit applications.
All of above procedures have been tested under Windows XP. Since I do not have access to the newer versions of Windows, I am unable to give you step by step guidelines, however DOSBox should solve problems in all versions of Windows.
